The incident happened one afternoon on a day in early September. According to the occupants of the horse-drawn vehicle, they were to the far right of the road when they were sideswiped by a motor vehicle. The contact allegedly caused the horses to startle and start running; the three occupants — brothers — were thrown from it. One of the brothers died.
Police say that the driver of the car that allegedly struck the buggy, a 24-year-old man, left the scene. Reports indicate that his vehicle was discovered in a corn field shortly afterward; police say that he had removed the license plates and VIN number. He and his wife were reportedly hiding nearby. The man’s blood alcohol content was reportedly significantly over the legal limit several hours after the accident occurred. He claims that the horse-drawn vehicle was in the middle of the road and there was nothing he could do to avoid the accident.
As a result of the drunk driving accusations, the man now faces multiple counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
