When it comes to drug use, you may feel as though you cannot help your actions. This may be because of a substance abuse disorder or mental illness.

According to Mental Health, substance abuse and mental health disorders often go together.

How does mental health affect substance abuse disorder?

If you have a mental health condition, it can lead to alcohol or drug use. Many people self-medicate and misuse medication to feel better. Some mental and substance use disorders have the same underlying cause. For example, you may have genetic vulnerabilities to both or you may experience trauma. Additionally, if you experiment with drugs or alcohol, addiction can lead to several symptoms that mental health professionals associate with mental illness.

What are the symptoms of substance abuse disorder?

Behavioral changes are among the first signs of a substance abuse problem. If you suffer from the disorder, you may find yourself in trouble a lot. You may tend to be involved in accidents, fights or other illegal activities. You may have been cautious in the past but suddenly find yourself using substances regardless of whether you have to operate a vehicle or any other heavy machinery.

Some of the other symptoms include:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Sudden mood swings
  • Feeling fearful, paranoid or anxious

In addition to mental changes, you may lose or gain weight suddenly. When you look in the mirror, you may look deteriorated compared to your previous appearance. Additionally, you may have slurred speech and tremors.

When you have mental health problems and a substance abuse disorder, you need to treat both to start a new life.
