Anytime people choose to pursue a political position — even if it appears to be a relatively minor one — they often set themselves up for additional scrutiny. Unfortunately, even a hint of illegal activity could be enough to garner media attention. In fact, the mayor of a Minnesota town is now coping with press coverage after he was accused of DUI.

Many of the details of the events leading to the man’s arrest are unclear. Though reports indicate that police were investigating a claim that the man had a suspended license, it is unclear from where that allegation originated. When police arrived, they claim that the man was preparing “to drive a school bus” and smelled of alcohol, though details regarding how police knew he was going to drive the bus or where he was going were not provided in reports regarding the incident; there were no students on the bus at the time.

Reports allege that a breath test indicated that the man was over the legally allowed limit for driving. The man allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol prior to his encounter with law enforcement officers and reportedly had an alcohol beverage in a coffee mug when he was on the bus. He is now facing three misdemeanor charges.

Unfortunately, the Minnesota man now faces a precarious legal situation as a result of the DUI and other accusations against him. In all criminal cases, there must be sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help examine the evidence against him and determine the most appropriate response.
