A wide range of things can land a person a traffic ticket here in Minnesota. Among these is being accused of texting while driving or certain other types of distracted driving. Recently, quite a few distracted driving tickets were issued in the state.

In mid-April, a two-week period of enhanced enforcement efforts regarding distracted driving was held here in Minnesota. According to recently released data, 1,017 distracted driving citations were issued during this period.

As this illustrates, there are some times of the year when authorities are especially on the lookout for distracted driving. However, these periods of upped enforcement are hardly the only time a Minnesota driver can be facing a distracted driving ticket. Such tickets are given year-round.

Statistics points to the number of such tickets given out here in Minnesota trending up. Last year, nearly 6,000 distracted driving citations were issued in the state. In comparison, 2014 only saw around 3,500 such citations.

One wonders how many such citations 2017 will end up seeing in the state by year’s end.

Society sometimes views traffic tickets as being fairly minor things. While traffic citations may not carry the same level of penalties as criminal charges, the consequences of such tickets can still have the potential to have real impacts on a person’s life. So, when a person has been issued a ticket for texting while driving or some other type of traffic violation, they may want guidance on how to respond to the ticket from a criminal defense attorney skilled in defending people’s rights in traffic violation cases.
